A TREASURE FOUND

When I was just a boy, I often left a blue rubber ball in my red Radio Flyer wagon, and as I pulled the wagon around the yard that ball would bounce back and forth, but I never wondered why it did that.

In a 1981 television interview, Richard P. Feynman related a similar story from his childhood, but then he told of his great pleasure in learning about the physics of inertia from that simple observation.

As a young physicist, Feynman helped develop the atomic bomb at Los Alamos, New Mexico, and then after the space shuttle Challenger exploded, he proved that the cause was cold, brittle, leaky O-rings.

These experiences are recounted in a collection of Feynman's lectures, interviews, and articles titled “The Pleasure of Finding Things Out”, which was published after his death by his family in 1999.

The theme of the book, although intended primarily for amateur physics buffs, is that a person derives immense pleasure just from learning new things.

All of us have seen the unrestrained joy shown by a child when he or she discovers something new in their world, and we have seen how proud they are to share this knowledge with anyone who will listen.

Occasionally we experience a similar joy when we uncover a new truth or gain a new insight from God's Word, and of course, we are eager to make this epiphany known to everyone we meet.

In Matthew 13:44 Jesus told his disciples this parable: “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid; and for joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.”

The first Christians “found” a treasure previously hidden from the world, and in their joy over it, they shared this good news with everyone, so that the gospel consumed the known world in just a few years.

This joy of discovering the Word of life is what the apostle John was referring to when he revealed his treasure in I John 1:4: “And these things we write to you that your joy may be full.”

But the good news was first given to the shepherds in the fields in Luke 2:10: “Then the angel said to them, 'Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people.'”

In our great joy, may we also be eager to share the treasure we have found with anyone who will listen.

  • Our Mission

    The Yucaipa church of Christ exists to glorify God, equip all Christians in their walk of faith, and win lost souls to Christ. We believe in the peace, love, and joy that God wants you to have.

    We invite you to come and worship the Lord in spirit and in truth. It is our prayer that you will want to visit us in person as we worship our Lord Jesus Christ and God the Father together.

    We are Christians who are committed to serving our Lord and Master. As believers our intent is to continue Jesus' mission. We know that Christ came to seek and save the lost. We further understand that all men are sinners. Without God's grace, all men would be lost and without hope. Our purpose is to spread the good news of Jesus to others that they too might enjoy God's saving grace through His word.

  • Core Beliefs

    This Church Is To Foster The Worship Of GodWorship in churches of Christ centers in five items, the same as in the first-century church. We believe the pattern is important. Jesus said, "God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth" (John 4:24). From this statement we learn three things:

    1) Our worship must be directed to the right object ... God;

    2) It must be prompted by the right spirit;

    3) It must be according to truth.

    To worship God according to truth is to worship him according to his Word, because his Word is truth (John 17:17). Therefore, we must not exclude any item found in his Word, and we must not include any item not found in his Word.

    In matters of religion we are to walk by faith (2 Corinthians 5:7). Since faith comes by hearing the Word of God (Romans 10:17), anything not authorized by the Bible cannot be done by faith ... and whatever is not of faith is sin (Romans 14:23).

    The five items of worship observed by the first-century church were singing, praying, preaching, giving, and eating the Lord's Supper.

    We Believe The Bible Is The Word Of GodWe are committed to the continual study of God’s Word, the Bible, to see how we can most closely give God the personal and collective worship He desires. (2 Timothy 3:16:17)

  • I'm New Tell Me More

    The Yucaipa church of Christ is excited about the future. Our goal is to develop dynamic group activities that serve to bring glory and honor to God. Everyone is important to God and His church. We want to help every member in our group activities to reach his or her fullest potential in life. Sometimes glorifying God will look like service involvement. At other times, it may simply be enjoying the mutual bond we share as believers in Christ through fellowship.

    Come and join us this week for Bible study and worship. We look forward to becoming your friend and having you as a member of our congregation.

  • What We Teach

    Baptism Is Essential For SalvationPerhaps you are wondering, "How does one become a member of the church of Christ?" What are the terms of membership?

    Churches of Christ do not speak of membership in terms of some formula which must be followed for approved acceptance into the church. The New Testament gives certain steps which were taken by people in that day to become Christians. When a person became a Christian he automatically was a member of the church.

    The same is true of churches of Christ today. There is no separate set of rules or ceremonies which one must follow to be inducted into the church. When one becomes a Christian he, at the same time, becomes a member of the church. No further steps are required to qualify for church membership.

    On the first day of the church's existence those who repented and were baptized were saved (Acts 2:38). And from that day forward all those who were saved were added to the church (Acts 2:47). According to this verse (Acts 2:47) it was God who did the adding. Therefore, in seeking to follow this pattern, we neither vote people into the church nor force them through a required series of studies. We have no right to demand anything beyond their obedient submission to the Savior.

    The conditions of pardon which are taught in the New Testament are:

    1) One must hear the gospel, for "faith comes by hearing the word of God" (Romans 10:17).
    2) One must believe, for "without faith it is impossible to please God" (Hebrews 11:6).
    3) One must repent of past sins, for God "commands all men, every- where to repent" (Acts 17:30).
    4) One must confess Jesus as Lord, for he said, "He that confesses me before men, him will I also confess before my father who is in heaven" (Matthew 10:32).
    5) And one must be baptized for the remission of sins, for Peter said, "Repent, and be baptized every- one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of your sins ..." (Acts 2:38).
