Weekly Thought

PELE

You may remember seeing the news reports on television of the lava flows from the Kilauea volcano on the “Big Island” of Hawaii that began on May 3, 2018, and eventually destroyed 716 homes.

This was a continuation of the same volcanic eruption I had witnessed almost twenty years earlier when I stood at the rim of the two-mile-wide caldera and looked down into “the lake of fire and brimstone”. (Revelation 20:10)

And watching that glowing hot lava pour into the Pacific Ocean at night was surely a sight to behold!

Kilauea was believed by the native Hawaiians to embody the fire goddess Pele, and today they still leave offerings at the crater rim to appease her, although that doesn't seem to work very well.

I have even seen a new unopened bottle of gin laying at the rim along with the other offerings to Pele!

Although Christian missionaries arrived in Hawaii in the 1820's, many present-day Hawaiians continue to practice their old religion, either out of an honest belief, or simply as a cultural tradition.

Federal and state laws give the native people there almost unlimited access to any area in the islands to practice their religion, and some areas are completely off limits to non-Hawaiians.

It is unfortunate that this same consideration for one's religion does not always extend to Christians.

But we know that the destructive force of Kilauea is only a small example of the great power of our God, and it cannot be assuaged by a tradition of making offerings to a false god, no matter how earnest.

My own family also has some strong traditions that came out of our culture, such as eating blackeyed peas on New Year's Day, but these can never take precedence over the Word of God.

Yet, do we Christians ever promote “traditions” that go beyond what is written? (I Corinthians 4:6)

Jesus quoted Isaiah in Mark 7:6 and 7 about this very subject, saying:      “This people honors Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me. And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.”

  • Our Mission

The Yucaipa church of Christ exists to glorify God, equip all Christians in their walk of faith, and win lost souls to Christ. We believe in the peace, love, and joy that God wants you to have.

We invite you to come and worship the Lord in spirit and in truth. It is our prayer that you will want to visit us in person as we worship our Lord Jesus Christ and God the Father together.

We are Christians who are committed to serving our Lord and Master. As believers our intent is to continue Jesus' mission. We know that Christ came to seek and save the lost. We further understand that all men are sinners. Without God's grace, all men would be lost and without hope. Our purpose is to spread the good news of Jesus to others that they too might enjoy God's saving grace through His word.

  • Core Beliefs

This Church Is To Foster The Worship Of GodWorship in churches of Christ centers in five items, the same as in the first-century church. We believe the pattern is important. Jesus said, "God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth" (John 4:24). From this statement we learn three things:

    1) Our worship must be directed to the right object ... God;

    2) It must be prompted by the right spirit;

    3) It must be according to truth.

To worship God according to truth is to worship him according to his Word, because his Word is truth (John 17:17). Therefore, we must not exclude any item found in his Word, and we must not include any item not found in his Word.

In matters of religion we are to walk by faith (2 Corinthians 5:7). Since faith comes by hearing the Word of God (Romans 10:17), anything not authorized by the Bible cannot be done by faith ... and whatever is not of faith is sin (Romans 14:23).

The five items of worship observed by the first-century church were singing, praying, preaching, giving, and eating the Lord's Supper.

We Believe The Bible Is The Word Of GodWe are committed to the continual study of God’s Word, the Bible, to see how we can most closely give God the personal and collective worship He desires. (2 Timothy 3:16:17)

  • I'm New Tell Me More

The Yucaipa church of Christ is excited about the future. Our goal is to develop dynamic group activities that serve to bring glory and honor to God. Everyone is important to God and His church. We want to help every member in our group activities to reach his or her fullest potential in life. Sometimes glorifying God will look like service involvement. At other times, it may simply be enjoying the mutual bond we share as believers in Christ through fellowship.

Come and join us this week for Bible study and worship. We look forward to becoming your friend and having you as a member of our congregation.

  • What We Teach

Baptism Is Essential For SalvationPerhaps you are wondering, "How does one become a member of the church of Christ?" What are the terms of membership?

Churches of Christ do not speak of membership in terms of some formula which must be followed for approved acceptance into the church. The New Testament gives certain steps which were taken by people in that day to become Christians. When a person became a Christian he automatically was a member of the church.

The same is true of churches of Christ today. There is no separate set of rules or ceremonies which one must follow to be inducted into the church. When one becomes a Christian he, at the same time, becomes a member of the church. No further steps are required to qualify for church membership.

On the first day of the church's existence those who repented and were baptized were saved (Acts 2:38). And from that day forward all those who were saved were added to the church (Acts 2:47). According to this verse (Acts 2:47) it was God who did the adding. Therefore, in seeking to follow this pattern, we neither vote people into the church nor force them through a required series of studies. We have no right to demand anything beyond their obedient submission to the Savior.

The conditions of pardon which are taught in the New Testament are:

    1) One must hear the gospel, for "faith comes by hearing the word of God" (Romans 10:17).
    2) One must believe, for "without faith it is impossible to please God" (Hebrews 11:6).
    3) One must repent of past sins, for God "commands all men, every- where to repent" (Acts 17:30).
    4) One must confess Jesus as Lord, for he said, "He that confesses me before men, him will I also confess before my father who is in heaven" (Matthew 10:32).
    5) And one must be baptized for the remission of sins, for Peter said, "Repent, and be baptized every- one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of your sins ..." (Acts 2:38).
