"Greet one another with a holy kiss. The churches of Christ greet you." - Romans 16:16
"EARL”
From 2005 to 2009 Jason Lee starred as Earl Hickey in the television series “My Name Is Earl”.
The premise of the show was that Earl was hit by a car as he was chasing a $100,000 lottery ticket, and that sent him to the hospital where he saw Carson Daly on television discussing “karma”.
Simply put, karma is the Hindu concept that “what goes around, comes around”, so Earl thought he was hit by the car because karma had finally caught up to him after all the bad things he had done in his life.
As he was recovering from his injuries, Earl made a long list of all the terrible deeds he had ever done, and then he set about making things right with everyone on his list.
So each episode began with Earl saying, “I’m just trying to be a better person.”
By the way, making the list is Step 8 in the Twelve-Step Program espoused by Alcoholics Anonymous, and making amends is Step 9 (which Jesus commanded us to do in Matthew 5:23 and 24).
The idea of karma was first mentioned in the “Rigveda”, a Sanskrit text written in India around 1500 BC at about the time that Moses produced the first five books of the Old Testament.
Karma was also described in the Chinese work “Tao Te Ching”, some of which was written around 400 BC at about the time that Malachi, the last prophecy of the Old Testament, was written.
Jesus Christ also revealed God’s use of karma in several different ways, such as in Luke 6:38, where He said, “For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.”
And the apostle Paul wrote something like that in Galatians 6:7, wording it this way: “…for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.”
But we must understand that the final exercise of karma will come in the afterlife.
II Corinthians 5:10 tells us: “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.”
So it appears that Earl was on the right track; if we likewise dedicate ourselves to “trying to be a better person” as we follow the Word, then we will surely fare much better before the judgment seat of Christ.
